This post is dedicated to any and all mommas. (Side-note - I think dads are da bomb as well, but since I'll never be able to relate to dads quite like I can to mommas, hence the dedication. Love to all dads.)
I've never been one to label any specific job as "hardest job in the world" because I truly believe there are many jobs that are taxing in every way. That being said, I have to say mommying definitely ranks in the top 5 best and hardest jobs in the world. In the short 18 hours I have nannied for the crazies (my affectionate name for these sweets), I have been completely exhausted, sweat through every layer of clothing, laughed until I cried, internally freaked because both littles were melting down in a parking lot, and had a combination of bananas and snot wiped in my hair. Ya'll, this mothering thing is not for the faint of heart.
Mommas, read: major props to you. You rock out at this mothering thing all day every day. You love with all you are even on the hard days. You put yourself aside for people less than half your size. And you cry tears of joy when your babes hand you weeds to put in a pretty vase. You are my heros. When I grow up, I want to be just like you.
This summer I have the glorious job of watching three of the most beautiful, animated, hilarious, adorably sweet, and undeniably awesome little boys (there are 4 other little boys I'm quite partial to) on Tuesdays. I often refer to them as the crazies because while they are 95% sweet, they are also 5% crazy (aka: full of little boy orneriness).
In my brief time with them so far this summer, I have learned an abundant amount of lessons I will undoubtedly take to motherhood whenever that time should come. The following are some snippets of our days together, and it should be noted that nothing, literally nothing, is exaggerated. People, weird stuff happens wherever I am, so my nannying gig is no different.
I took the twins (22 months old) to a local kids place where nothing is off-limits and the phrase "no, no, don't touch that" is never uttered (blissful). While in the toddler area and while attempting to create a colossal padded fort for the boys, I stepped on a rainbow-shaped pad, twisted my ankle, awkwardly flailed (you guys, I'm gangly, so anytime I lose my balance, it's ain't pretty), and promptly crashed to the ground. In the process, I skinned my knee pretty bad. Remember how bad it hurts when you skin your knee? Oh right, you probably don't because you probably haven't skinned your knee for a good two decades. Yeah.... And the best part is that the toddlers just kept playing unbeknownst to my pain while the other moms in the fenced-off area looked at me with such pity. Apparently my face told the story of how my knee was feeling. Cheers to you, moms, for making it look graceful when painful things happen.
On our way to the van from the play place, the twins took turns being sad about leaving. I lack a tremendous amount of upper body strength, so carrying them both was just not an option. Since they were kind enough to take turns being sad, I figured I would return the favor and take turns carrying each of them. While not fool-proof, my plan worked as we safely arrived to the van a mere 15 minutes after we left. And the best part is, by this point, I had only sweat through one layer of clothes. Props to moms with multiple littles. How you manage to make it in and out of stores without breaking a sweat (or joining your littles in their melt-down!) astounds me.
I picked up the older brother and one of his buddies just after lunch, and by the time everyone was safely buckled, one of the toddlers pointed to his shoeless right foot. Awesome. With sweat literally dripping off my face at this point, I looked around the van to no avail. Minor freak-out ensued. I finally found the shoe in the front seat (don't ask) and felt much relieved. Well done, moms, for you do extremely complicated things (like transport multiple children of various ages) with ease. And you rarely sweat. Seriously, how do you do it!?
Bathtime happened right after naps this week. One of my buddies was so sad about it, so I let him play with the cup that they use to dump water on their heads pre- and post-shampooing (awful explanation - I assume you understand the concept of a cup in the bathtub). Rookie mistake. One minute later, I was drenched after he thought he would return the favor and dump an entire cup of water on me. Love to you, moms, for you have learned to laugh when your babes make you look like a hot mess. You continue to amaze me.
Mommas - your job is exhausting in every way. (Literally, every muscle in my body ached after yesterday. No joke. But my heart was also ridiculously full.) You have the power to shape moldable little minds and hearts - what a privilege! The maddest of props to you, mommys. And while I can't say it yet, whenever I see you in public with a little, I just want to take your hand and say, "Solidarity, sister. I get it. Keep going." Utmost respect to you for doing what you do all day every day. The world is truly a better place because of you.

#bffCruise2013
The happiest times were meal times.
Sweet memories.
If you've never been on a cruise, I highly recommend it. My favorite part? Endless hours of lounging while reading. So relaxing.
A beach on the Yucatan peninsula.
Our night in the 80's themed Micado lounge.
The last morning we rose early to get a glimpse of the sunset.
And that's that. I love that we spent more time enjoing our time together than trying to take the perfect picture...most of the time. And I love that my husband was totally okay with me spending my spring break with 2 of my besties from childhood. What a gem he was to let me do that.
So what would you like next? A recipe? School story? House project? Holla!

Happy People & Yummies
Two of my favorite things are people and food. One thing I love about summer is the ability to visit as many people as possible. I take loads of day trips to see lovelies and truly treasure the fact that my job allows me a summer to spend time with people I love. That being said, here are some sweet pics I yanked from my camera waaaaaaay late. (I recognize that this paragraph is jumbled and, you will find out, somewhat unrelated to the rest of this post. My apologies.)
January 2013. My parents took my grandparents on a tour de Glanzer grandchildren. And this was taken on their stop in Topeka. Grandma showed me a few new knitting tricks during their time here. I'll never be as talented as she, but I feel like I caught on fast. :)
February 2013. Pile o nephews. Everything about this cracks me up.
February 2013. For Daniel's bday, we purchased pizza from 6 pizza places and played "guess the pizza." Absolutely hysterical. I lost MISERABLY.
February 2013. Snow time with some nephs. Spent 30 minutes bundling for 20 minutes of snow time. Totally worth it.
Twins?
March 2013. I love everything about this picture. Jes is genuinely laughing, and she's the only one still eating her cupcake. The rest of us snarfed those suckers down immediately. Cheri is beautifully glowingly pregnant. Katherine is reading the baby shower mad lib we completed (the most hilarious thing of all time). And the best part is sweet Kayna. She's just taking it all in with a smile on her face. I'm certain she's looking at B who is undoubtedly singing "Do Re Mi." Special, memorable times.
The end of the sweet weekend. We met in Dallas this year and it was wonderful.
March 2013. Easter!!!!
Friends, did you remember that I began this post stating that I love people and food? I have not forgotten about the food part. I take eating very seriously. I especially take eating tex-mex food very seriously. And the best taco salad recipe of all times happens to be in one of my cook books. So, Laura, if you're reading this, know that I make this ALL THE TIME. And everyone loves it. Best ever.
Taco Rice Salad (aka: best taco salad ever!)
1 pound ground round
1 garlic clove (minced)
3 cups cooked yellow rice
1 tsp. ground cumin
1 tsp. chili powder
1/4 tsp. salt
1/4 tsp. black pepper
6 cups torn romaine lettuce
3 cups chopped tomatoes
1 cup frozen corn
1/2 cup chopped red onion
1 can black beans (rinsed and drained)
1/2 cup shredded cheese
Dressing:
2/3 cup sour cream
2/3 cup picante sauce
1 tsp. chili powder
1/2 tsp. ground cumin
Brown hamburger and add garlic. Drain grease. Stir in cooked rice and the next 4 ingredients. Combine lettuce and next 4 ingredients into a bowl. Toss with cheese and dressing.
Sometimes I'm lazy and just add a packet of taco seasoning instead of the 4 spices. And sometimes I put the lettuce on the side and let people eat it with chips or inside a taco shell. But all the time, it is comforting and so yummy. Make it tonight. It's great hot or cold, so it's a perfect dish to make ahead of time. Enjoy, readers!

House Tour: May 2013
Helloooooooooooooooooooo long lost lovely readers. So many of you made me feel all warm and mushy inside when you would inquire about my lack of posting. Seriously. Many happy feelings were felt. Soooooooo, I'm baaaaaaaaaaaaaack. :)
And it only seems normal to begin my return from the nether blog world with a tour of the Carlson Casa. We have officially lived here for 18 months (as opposed to "unofficially" which I suppose would be synonymous with squatting??) and the old house on Birchwood has seen quite a transformation thus far. Complete with blood, sweat, and many tears (you know how I tend to be dramatic). Daniel (Fatty, husband, hubs, hubz, hubbsie, husbie, etc.) has been my ever wonderful partner through the whole thing. Typically what happens is that I have an idea but have no idea how to make it happen. Enter hubz. He always knows exactly what to do and how to make my idea come to life. And that, my sweet blog readers, is one of the reasons why our marriage works. I'm all "I NEED to make this shelf hang right HERE" and he's all "Um, yeah, not possible.....but let's do this instead" and I'm all "You're my heroooooooo!" Okay, enough of that. Ready to see the house?? (All pictures are unedited because (1) I'm lazy and (2) I really have no idea how to edit photos.....anyone care to show me in less than 30 minutes? I'm finding that my attention span in the summer is similar to that of a gnat's.)
Now seriously, are you ready!??!?!?! **Cue drumroll.
PS - I'm only showing you the rooms we've actually touched. There are other rooms in the house (namely, another bathroom, two bedrooms, a silly basement, an entry way, a window seat, and a happy little sewing nook), and most will be touched this summer.
Let's walk, shall we? (For fun, I would like you to count birds while you look. Let me know how many you found...)
This is what I refer to as the "living room." It is the front room, and while most people would probably consider a space like this to be a "formal" living room, it will actually one day be a living room/play room (no, this is not a subtle announcement). BIG plans for the room include laying carpet, adding faux built-ins on the back wall, and making the doorway from the living room to the kitchen wider for more of an open-concept feel. We'd also like to add a wood burning stove insert. Oh, and I want to make curtains this summer.
One of my favorite vingnettes in the house. And my trusty red dresser. And a lamp that needs some serious TLC. And a sweet rocking chair that was Daniel's when he was a little spit-fire. The hanging print I snagged at a garage sale for a quarter. Major score.
This is a holding zone for some of my accessories. When I want to change things up, I almost always look here first. I've thought about chalk painting this little shelf. Color ideas?
We painted this bad boy on one of my dozens of snow days this winter. And that bin underneath I grabbed at our TJ Maxx for a few bucks.
Just threw this stuff up last night. Will probably play with it some more, but it's a starting point. The vase on the right definitely will need some different flowers, but that's what I had on hand.
Another angle. My mom (bless her) painted the blue table while she and my dad were here one weekend.
And another angle. The brass is so shiny!!!!!
Baker's rack that was in Daniel's room growing up. And that typewriter? Garage sale, baby.
Happy pillows. I may have a pillow problem.
And this room, my sweets, was just put together a few hours ago. Daniel tore down the wallpaper in March. We painted and did our take on board and batten a few weeks later. And I made the curtains this week.
See that pillow? (It has a bird on it in case you're counting.) The wall color is actually color-matched to the pillow. The walls are looking a little more green in the pictures than they actually are.
A glimpse at the entryway. Silly brassy chandelier. Big plans for that sucker.
I really like the curtains "tied" back, so I think I might make some ties out of the yellow fabric on the left. I just used scraps to tie them for now.
I love this chair. Daniel thinks it's the ugliest piece of furniture ever created. To each his own.
Let's take a step outside, shall we? We love our screened-in porch. Many good times and conversations have been had out here.
I'm so proud of my succulent garden. The flower on the left was in my wedding bouquet, so every time I look at it, I get all sentimental.
We have a friend who works for a coffee roasting company, so he gave us these two bags that we wrapped around some homemade frames. Just need to add one more on the right.
I have two chairs that will be painted and added to this sweet space. And I made some bunting a few years ago that I want to hang out here as well.
The little table in the corner is perfect for hosting meals out here.
Mom and I painted these little pots awhile ago, and I added the various sweet potato vines last week. Ignore the cesspool that is the standing water below. We've had torrential rains every day this week.
Boom. We're back inside. Daniel and I cleaned out this room on Memorial Day, thus making the act of doing laundry at least tolerable.
Our faux mudroom. The basket at the top collects clothes from our laundry chute.
And behind the door. On the right is an old window that I painted with chalkboard paint and hot glued some some clothes pins to (ignore the fact that that sentence ends with a preposition.....it's summer!!!!!!).
We have a gazillion nephews and so we keep toys and such in here to quickly grab when needed.
Upstairs! This is actually the only space I'll show you upstairs. Some of my summer plans include overhauling the office/guest room and the upstairs bathroom and potentially revisiting the window seat. So for now, here is the progress in the master bedroom.
Last year we found the door at a flea market in Abilene, painted it, added some trim to the top, and attached it to the wall.
The duvet cover and shams are from Ikea. (Can I get a woot-woot about the Ikea coming to KC in 2014!?!)
Daniel's clothes dresser and my accessory holder. He's such a gracious husband.
Downstairs bathroom. Another summer task is to make valances for the family room (which I'm about to show you). So to prepare, I decided to make a quick valance for the bathroom. Pretty pleased with how it turned out. And, get this, I didn't even touch my sewing machine. I enjoy sewing, but it wonderfully simple to just use hem tape.
Happy yellow stripes.
And the namesake of this here blog.
This bathroom was one of last summer's projects. We just accessorized it this spring.
And the kitchen/family room. Where we do 75% of our living.
Remember last summer how we (and several incredibly giving people) painted the cabinets? Yeah, me too. Longest. House. Project. EVER. But so thankful that we did it.
The paint is holding up remarkably well (it better!!). There are a few spots I need to scrub with a magic eraser, but that's about it.
Oh, and did you notice that the teal is all gone? It was fun while it lasted.
Two things. Please notice the stuff on the table in the dining room. Yeah, I did some shuffeling of things whilst taking pictures. Our house is never this picked up. We're real people. Also, we have yet to reattach the glass doors to the top of this cabinet. Yeah, it miiiiight happen this summer.
Where we dine 90% of the time.
Daniel pointed out to me that I'm amassing quite the collection of mauve furniture. Yep.
My, oh my, did this collection of hanging things take FOREVER to decide. We're pretty happy with the results. And many thanks for our ever-faithful Monday-night-dinner crew for helping make it happen.
This baby can comfortably sit 7 adults. Our small group is not small and we need every inch of this.
My sister-in-law, Roxanne, gave me that adorable lamp for Christmas this year. Love it.
And the final image on our tour.
If you made it this far, kudos. You're the best. Seriously though, you guys are great. Thanks to those of you who mentioned that you enjoy reading about and seeing glimpses into our lives.
Here's to a summer of fun, photos, and hopefully more updates. Loves.
